Engineering the Engineers

How L&T acts as an incubator for engineers

A true meritocracy is one where hard work & talent rule and opportunity favours every single employee equally. L&T, as India’s largest engineering, construction and technology conglomerate, holds this especially true.

On an average, L&T recruits over 1,800 engineers every year. The journey of these engineers is an exhilarating and enriching one. Fresh from top engineering colleges they are inducted into the company as Diploma Engineer Trainees (DETs), Graduate Engineer Trainees (GETs) or Post Graduate Engineer Trainees (PGETs).

The first step in the process is an extended induction programme named ‘Prayag’ that introduces the fresh engineers to the L&T world – from its business verticals to expanse, various functions to expertise, value system to the code of conduct. These learnings are later on reinforced through activities on L&T’s very own digital learning platform ATLNext.

The induction programme also includes hands-on technical training in specially designed workshops / labs and thus making the engineers industry-ready. Corresponding to their specialisation, they are then assigned to one or the other business verticals of L&T where they undergo further industry-specific training.

In addition to the technical facets, the fresh engineers also acquire soft skills, both through class-room sessions and on internal virtual platforms.

But what, perhaps, is most important that at an early stage in their career, the young engineers get direct insights and handholding from senior colleagues to enable them take up higher responsibilities. This helps them experience a substantial part of project management.

CONTINUOUS LEARNING

We know that today’s engineers are tomorrow’s managers, and the development of managers begins right at the supervisory level with Supervisory Development Programmes conducted in collaboration with the country’s Top Management Institutes.

Through continuous learning, hard work and innovation, once an engineer reaches the management grade in L&T, they find themselves on yet another flight to knowledge.

They can further develop their managerial and business skills through advanced Management programmes conducted through our partner B Schools.

We also work with B Schools (among the highest rated in the country including IIM-C, IIM-B, XLRI-Jamshedpur) to run shorter duration Management Development Programmes and Competency Development Programmes for various levels of engineer-managers.

At L&T Construction, after spending two years, fresh engineers are provided an opportunity to pursue the MTech programme in Construction Technology & Management at premier IITs / NITs in India under L&T’s fully sponsored ‘Build India Scholarship’.

This is aimed at grooming the engineers as specialists in functions such as execution, planning, contracts, plant & machinery, environment health & safety, etc. Readying them for a future in which they head such functions as they grow within the organisation.

UNMATCHED TRAINING INSTITUTES

Engineers in L&T get the opportunity to choose the stream of their interest - be it managerial, technical, or project management. And once they make a choice, L&T continuously provides them specialised inputs towards advancement in the area of interest. Our dedicated training facilities are unparalleled in the Indian industrial spectrum.

The facilities include the Institute of Project Management in Chennai and Vadodara, the Building Information Modeling Academy in Chennai, the Power Training Institute at Vadodara, the Competency Development Centre for Rail Construction at Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu, the Safety Innovation School in Hazira in Gujarat, and Kancheepuram, Corporate Technology & Engineering Academy in Mumbai and Mysuru, and Construction Skills Training Institute in Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Cuttack, Bangalore, Kolkata, and Kancheepuram.

Then, there is L&T Leadership Development Academy at Lonavala, near Mumbai, with world-class infrastructure and the most conducive learning environment.
